In Silk, a carved piece of drapery hangs from a twig in a playful dialogue between the real and the almost real. The curves and movements of the drapery are evocative of an aesthetic ideal from a past era of sculpture. In classical carving, drapery serves to embellish and accentuate the forms beneath it, usually the human figure, or used as a decorative device with other ornamental objects and motifs. Silk instead speaks to the lines and movements of the fabric itself, embodying the delicate nature of silk in the entirely contrasting medium of wood.
