I focused on what remains of the Sycamore Gap tree and was drawn to the idea of new growth emerging from the old — an image I interpreted quite literally. I wanted to create an object from the sycamore that could support new life or growth of a new plant. This led to the concept of a simple plant pot stand. To reflect the form of the original stump, I tapered the legs of the stand, giving a subtle nod to its shape. I also included a lower shelf to both showcase more of the timber and add a secondary function to the piece. In future iterations, the legs could be made from various parts of the tree. They don’t need to be as clean or precise as in the prototype — in fact, retaining natural features like bark or the original contours of the wood could enhance the overall character and connection to the tree.
