Grown for 7 years and adorned in our homes for 1 month, these coniferous trees are then unceremoniously disposed of, incinerated or chipped. Using Craft, I created a process to turn this “waste” into treasure, engaging in deep and prolonged material exploration. This work sits within a larger research project named “Embedding Craft into the Curriculum”, a case for Craft education during the climate emergency. I argue that engaging with materials critically using Craft encourages climate-positive habits and thinking structures like resourcefulness and material literacy. With links to John Ruskin and Tony Fry’s concept of ‘futuring’, Craft in this body of work is an agency-maker, teacher and allows the reimagining of a better future.
