Key influences were drawn from Japanese design philosophy. Wabi-sabi informs an appreciation for imperfection, longevity of material, and simplicity, encouraging a material-led approach, which is why I focused my efforts on using solid oak, a commonly used wood in Japan. Mottainai emphasises minimal waste, longevity, and repairability, influencing the use of recyclable materials such as paper and wood, while encouraging a design approach focused on durability and the product’s lifecycle. Mingei highlights the importance of everyday usefulness and honest, anonymous Japanese craftsmanship, reinforcing a focus on function, while yūgen inspires a more subtle and restrained expression of beauty, suggesting rather than suggesting.
