Her Captain’s Chair

This project is a redesign of my Mum’s well-used captain’s chair. This style of Windsor chair was originally used to keep a ship’s captain awake and alert but also comfortable whilst on shift. I took this specific function of the design but gave it a more modern take from a woman’s perspective. I have always been conscious of women’s positions in the design industry, so this chair is designed to address the lack of women in higher-level positions by ensuring a working woman is comfortable and confident.I researched postures specific to women and postures that encourage confidence and creativity. I spoke to women occupying positions of authority in industry to gain insight into what elements of their environment make them feel confident and enabled to perform to their highest capability. The silhouette follows that of my own captain’s chair and others, with a mid-back bow that is at a consistent height around the seat and a raised back above it which is used as a handle. It has 2 identical bows which are joined to create the illusion of one continuous bow: a light, elegant shape with feminine resonance, that’s strong and functional. The carved seat and back height allow a user to lean back or sit up, encouraging comfort and focus. It includes a crinoline stretcher, a historic example of gendered design. The stretcher recalls the frame of a crinoline skirt, designed for aesthetic effect, but maybe also for creating more legroom to accommodate a large skirt.
